Abstract

This reflective piece explores the personal and generational journey of choosing a career in medicine, framed by the timeless question “To be or not to be a doctor.” It highlights the challenges and significance of this life-shaping decision, the true meaning of being a “doctor” as a teacher, and the enduring role of mentorship beyond formal academic settings. Central to the narrative is the author’s father, Dr. Tito Torralba, whose example as physician, teacher, and dean profoundly shaped her path. His influence illustrates how exemplary practice and compassionate patient care can inspire future physicians within and beyond the classroom.
